Death at Medivue Hospital Caused by BAD Post-Operative Care

My grandmother passed away few days ago in Kolkata due to bad post-opeartive care. I want to share this story with the community, so that there is awareness of how bad some Kolkata hospitals have gotten. It seems that they will do just about anything for money.

Grandmother went in to Medivue Hospital (Ballygunge) about 20 days ago because of a fall. X-rays were taken which showed that she had a fracture on her back which was pushing the outerlining of the spinal cord. The emergency/general doctor in charge was Dr. Rachana Santhaliya. She suggested that we get an opinion from the Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Amal Bhattacharjee who is supposedly well-known in the community. He said that it was necessary to perform surgery and replace the fractured bone with a metal rod, otherwise Grandmother might become paralyzed later on and never walk. We told him over and over that Grandmother was diabetic and about 77 years old, was it wise to do surgery then. He guaranteed that he would have her up and walking within 3 days of the surgery.

Once the surgery was complete, Dr. Amal Bhattacharjee went on vacation – he did not stay to watch the patient’s recovery. During this time, the nurses on duty were taking care of Grandmother. They would only clean the surgery area every two days. Grandmother could not get up, so she had to be fed in bed. The nurses tried to force food into her mouth, causing her to choke. The general doctor, Dr. Rachana Santhaliya figured this a good time to puncture a hole in my grandmother’s throat and claim that is was pulmonary edema (lung problems).

One day we went in the hospital, post-operation and saw Grandma was lying in a blood soaked bed. The surgical wound had opened and no one was watching. After this, the orthopedic surgeon in charge Dr. Amol Bhattacharjee sent his assistant as he was too busy vacationing to look after my grandmother. The assitant’s name is Shishir Das – he looked at her and cleaned the wound.

By this time, 1 week had passed after the surgery and both doctors: Dr. Rachana Santhaliya and Dr. Amal Bhattacharjee were saying that they would release my grandmother the coming Tuesday. Then she could go home, rest for sometime, do physical therapy and start walking again.

Sunday night, my grandmother’s breathing slowed down and she could no longer urinate due to a deadly urinary infection. Her urea level was high. Dr. Rachana Santhaliya even admitted that this infection was due to bad care by her hospital as they did not clean the cathetar (bed-ridden person urinates by this) all the time.
Monday night, my grandmother had a massive heart attack and was tied down to a ventilator. Remember, the doctor’s said she would be released Tuesday. She was now infected with pseudomonas aeruginosa (A pseudomonas infection that is caused by a bacterium, Hospitalized patients are a high-risk group, because P. aeruginosa is often found in hospitals.).

At this point, the Dr. Santhaliya had no choice but to tell us that my grandmother only had few hours to live. Grandmother passed away Wednesday morning.

If you are a resident of Kolkata or are going to be visiting Kolkata and are sick or know someone who is: please do NOT go to Medivue Hospital on Broad Street in Ballygunge. Do NOT go to the following doctors (and if you must please get a second opinion): Dr. Rachana Santhaliya, Dr. Amal Bhattacharjee, Dr. Shisir Das. My grandmother would have been alive today if it was not for their bad decisions and horrible post-operative care. After her death, we learned that the hospital is also resposible for many other similar cases. Please do your research before you submit your loved ones to a Kolkata hospital.
