YA, movie review SHAI

India. We have seen the Taj Mahal, we strolled along the holy river and we have been covered in bright colourful powders for our Instagram feed… But this director had a different take on it, went bonkers on this one, and ended up being lost in the Himalayas looking for hiphop.

When Shueti (director) was asked to shoot a simple documentary of dancer/choreographer Shailesh Bahoran’s journey to India as inspiration for his upcoming show Aghori, he respectfully declined. And then happily continued to hi-jack Shailesh’ whole trip while transforming the documentary into trippy short film, possibly best enjoyed while smoking some Himalayan Kush.
In his latest work Shueti seems to be primarily focussing on the approach, maybe even more so than on the narrative itself. SHAI is a mesmerizing combination of traditional cinematic structures and a subtle touch of MTV video cult.
The physical guideline for the story is Shailesh ascending a staircase, where each floor introduces us to a new world, a new perspective and a new story. Accompanied by several haunting ethereal soundtracks done by; as shueti claims ‘the reverb master’ Joeri Woudstra.
Narrated by Shailesh mother, Shueti scatters little mysteries; details and stories that somehow seem all be connected in very subtle ways.

So, what became of this project? Does it feel like a documentary or an art project? Maybe it is best described as a high-profile, biographical, long ass music video short film. But that doesn’t really sound right does it? It’s probably the Kush talking.

What I can say is that SHAI is a very new and bright way of looking at film and a very original and captivating take at a documentary. Might need to watch it again and again. As should you.
